LA NOTTE

Directed by Michaelangelo Antonioni

Antonioni was an Italian filmmaker at the crest of several movements- Italian neorealism, French New Wave…but he created his own special style. La Notte {The Night} probably best expresses his vision. It is a dreamlike film, its landscape filled with decadent people and their dysfunctional relationships. Somehow it picks up on the vacancy of the soul that characterizes humankind at times, perhaps when we have too much of the material and no sense of belonging to anything bigger than ourselves. The plot meanders through the lives of an unhappily married couple on one mad, wild night of sadness disguised as revelry, and is riveting in its skillful storytelling. It stars the biggest Italian stars of the time, Marcello Mastroianni, Jeanne Moreau, and Monica Vitti.
