Do you find yourself checking your Facebook account or Twitter feed every fifteen minutes at work? You’re not alone- we’re giving you company for sure! And while ‘web crawling’ is endemic, we might as well try browsing through something new and interesting on these entertaining and incredibly creative websites. It definitely tops looking at 156 pictures, that girl you met last year at your ex’s party, or stalking a new ‘friend’ on Facebook.
Here’s our Shortlist
For the Artist | Jacksonpollock.org
Designed by multimedia artist Miltos Manetas, Jacksonpollock.org allows you to indulge the abstract artist within you. Log on and you’re greeted with a totally blank webpage that will be your canvas. Moving the mouse splatters virtual paint and a click of the mouse changes the color of the splatters. The first color is always black, but the colors that follow are random and include neon green, blue, neon pink, green and brown. Click on the space bar to clear the canvas for a new painting.
While the site can be addictive, it doesn’t suck you in like Facebook. Enjoy it while it lasts!
P.S | The Ipad Application is also awesome.
Typography Junkies | Shape.method.ac
Shape Type shows you ten letters per game; you adjust each one, trying to get the curves to match up as neatly as possible with the ones the original font-maker designed. It takes just a few seconds (a minute or two at most) to play each individual letter. But we played for an hour before noticing how much time had gone by.
For when you need to Laugh out Loud | Texts From Last Night
Whether you’re having a dull afternoon at work or just a boring snoring day in general, this one has people sending texts and one liners, commonly from those ‘hard to remember’ nights. Funny texts like this one, “mimosa in my stainless steel water bottle. going green is not that bad,” are forwarded to the site. Another one from last week went something like this, “Omggg I Just saw a real owl just chilling on top of a sign post. I walked up to him and said hoo hooooo and he turned his head at me and was like yeah bro”.
Not generally for the prude, this one, but hey- whatever rocks your socks!
The Thinkers & Readers | www.brainpickings.org
“Because creativity, after all, is a combinatorial force.” This site is for the voracious readers, the thinkers, the ones who like a daily dose of quotable quotes and those who are keen on learning about anything and everything. From articles titled ‘From Fitzgerald to Reagan, 5 Letters of Fatherly Advice from History’s Greatest Public Dads’ to ‘Against Positive Thinking: Uncertainty as the Secret of Happiness‘, there’s plenty to read and plenty to learn- an intellectually stimulating way to spend your time.
